AFA Research Grant Selection Panel

Out of 44 proposals from nine countries ranging from Nepal, Australia, to countries within the Southeast Asia region, the panel has made the decision to award the Grant to researchers from the School of Information Systems and Accounting – Faculty of Business Government and Law, University of Canberra with the proposal titled A Study on Key Institutional Environment of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Expected Roles of Accounting Profession in ASEAN

The research will be looking to establish the parameters of current approaches to regulating/defining SMES in the ASEAN region, compare with other jurisdictions, and identify similarities/differences and best practice. Also, to identify existing accounting and financial management practices in place for SMEs in ASEAN, and strategies available to accounting professional bodies in the ASEAN region to support and enhance the potential of SMEs. Lastly, it is aiming to identify key financial, accounting and management needs of SMEs in ASEAN, resources and training for accountants in the region, and training and educational supports needed by SMEs or by SME accountants to understand the business implications of SMEs and IFRS for SMEs as a mechanism for accessing alternative sources of finance.

Prof. Lindawati Gani as a member of the selection panel reiterated the importance for AFA to play a bigger role in contributing to the SMEs sector of Southeast Asia. “This research will be AFA’s important contribution not just to the accountancy profession but also the ever growing SMEs sector, which have proven to be the important backbone of the region’s economy”.

The research will be conducted in an eight months period beginning March 2017.
